The Marni Animal House Furniture Project: Salone del Mobile
The kooky yet luxury Italian fashion label, contributed the Marni Animal House furniture project to this years Salone del Mobile in Milan. The Creative Director Carolina Castiglioni has collaborated with a group of Columbian women on a limited edition collection of handwoven furniture and the odd fun “animal”.
Marni has always been a very interesting and intriguing fashion label and continues to be so as it blossoms into its own unique and colourful world of interiors. What is more Marni does this with intelligence and conscience as it creates interconnections with differing creative domains. The Marni Animal House is the third edition of Castiglioni’s Colombian initiative – the first two series were crafted by former prisoners.
For this series Castiglioni collaborated with a group of Colombian women who have handwoven intricate patterns in PVC thread onto asymmetric pieces of furniture which were designed by the Marni team.
The Marni deployed workshop provides work and hence stability to women, often whom are single mothers or within struggling communities within rural Colombia. The revenue from the sales of the Marni Animal House goes to an organisation that offers help and support to terminally ill children.
Carolina Castiglioni explained at Salone del Mobile that the furniture project “linked to the concept of modularity, allowing interpretation in different compositions”. ” This idea of individuality and unique combinations” remains reflective of the Brand’s handwriting. The bright colours conveyed she said “a naive, yet graphic effect, which is distinctive of Marni”.
This video documents the story of the project and also an insight into the social conscience of the laudable Brand. Video courtesy of Marni
